Landing at O’Hare, half-starved by Spirit Air’s lack of in-flight food service, our first priority was to find food near our hotel. Boy – did we luck out!

Technically located in Schaumburg, IL, the Greek Village Taverna is a gem of a Greek restaurant conveniently located within walking distance from the Homewood Suites.

We walked in and I was hooked.

The ambiance at lunch and dinner is casual with a tendency toward romantic. The restaurant is designed to look like an outdoor cafe complete with a giant tree in one of the dining areas. The bar area offers dining as well and gives one the impression of sitting at a sidewalk cafe.

Sitting in the bar area, I couldn’t help but start taking pictures of the dining area. The lighting was interesting; the sidewalk cafe look was created by an indoor eve. I knew my Husband was busy htinking about what he could implement at home. I was in love, instantly with the interior designer.

The food is magnificent.

The three of us split a very generous portion of Tzatziki, complete with fresh-baked bread (which I did sample, gleefully cheating on my gluten-free diet) and a Greek salad. They make their own salad dressing which is slightly sweet and easy on the herbs.

Generous Portions of Good Tasting Food

Hannah had her favorite Avegolimone, a tangy lemon soup with rice. She described it as the best she’s ever tasted. Bob played it safe with an enormous Gyro platter and I had to try their orange-infused Greek sausage.

But what about the Greek Sausage

In many other Greek restaurants, the Greek sausage, while flavorful, has tended toward the overcooked, dry side. Not so at the Greek Village taverna. When I cut into the sausage and saw the juices flowing, I knew this sausage was different. While ever-so-slightly on the salty side, each sausage was very moist and just melted in my mouth.

I couldn’t believe how lucky we were to happen upon this place.

We ended up returning for dinner and drinks and weren’t disappointed. Our next visit to Chicago will include a stop here at the Greek Village Taverna. Until then!
